Cultural Groups

Our Cultural Events Program Leader, Mrs Bernadetta Abell, coordinates the Cultural Life at our College. From Music Ministry to Drum Corps, the opportunities to participate are varied.

Cultural Committee

Are you enthusiastic about the Cultural life and activities at HSC? This group organises and promotes a variety of events held at the College throughout the year including Battle of the Beats and Festival of the Arts!

club.arts@hsc is an umbrella for extra-curricular learning opportunities in the Arts and many aspects of cultural life in the College. club.arts@hsc encompasses extra-curricular workshops, learning experiences and events that happen throughout the year at Holy Spirit College.

Christian Ministry

Music Ministry

Music Ministry is a group of young Christian leaders who come together each week to rehearse and worship through liturgical music. The group rehearses for Masses at the College and at St Joseph’s Parish, and lead the opening prayer through songs on various occasions, including concerts and award ceremonies. Opportunities to develop the students’ passion are provided through music workshops and community outreach initiatives.

Visual Arts

ArtOfficials

‘ArtOfficials’ is a group of enthusiastic students who undertake self-devised visual arts projects. Their work includes community murals, set design and painting for school productions, as well as supporting and devising art for the annual VariARTy Visual Arts Exhibition.

Art Therapy

‘ArtOfficials’ is a group of enthusiastic students who undertake self-devised Visual Arts projects. Their work includes community murals, set design and painting for school productions, as well as running tours and art projects at the annual VariARTy Exhibition.

Clay Club

In Clay Club, a local artist assists students to learn both hand building and wheel throwing techniques using clay. Clay artworks are then fired ready for students to take home.

Other Visual Art Media

Other Visual Art workshops are offered throughout the year, depending on the availability of staff and tutors, for example: Silk Painting Workshop and Drawing like the Masters.

Photography Club

Photography Club has been a feature of the club.arts offerings from its inception in 2002. Photography Club: Essentials focus on composition, tricky pics and digital manipulation. This has produced some wonderfully creative images which are exhibited at our Cultural Awards Showcase.

Public Speaking

Competitions

There are a number of opportunities throughout the year for students to participate in Public Speaking competitions including Lions Youth of the Year.

Debating

Do your parents always tell you to stop arguing? This may be the group for you! Debating is the fine art of persuading others to believe your point of view.

Opti-MINDS

Holy Spirit College has a proud tradition of competing in the Opti-MINDS event.  Teams are posed with a conundrum that they work together to solve within a given time frame.  On the day, teams are also involved in impromptu problem-solving.  This is a great opportunity for those who like to work as a team to solve fun, yet challenging dilemmas.

Performing Arts

Band

The Band welcomes members of all skill levels for any brass, woodwind or percussion instrument. The Band performs at a number of functions and College events. Weekly rehearsals are required in preparation for events such as the Mackay Eisteddfod and Awards Evenings.

Choir

The College Choir is open for all students who have a love and passion for singing.  The Choir performs at many special events, including the Mackay Eisteddfod and Awards Evenings.  The Choir rehearses weekly in preparation for their performances throughout the year.

Dance Troupe

Students can join the Dance Troupe and participate in many different events throughout the year. No experience is necessary to participate in this group. Dance Troupe performs at many events, including Twilight Concerts, Lunchbox Concerts and Awards Evenings, and competes in the Rock Pop Mime competition. Dance Troupe rehearses weekly.

Digital DJs

The Digital DJs are a group of enthusiastic students who work with state-of-the-art equipment to create their own DJ tracks and sets. The group perform at a number of College events, with a tutorial session each week.

Drum Corps

Drum Corps welcomes students in all year levels, of all abilities, who have an interest in developing their skills in drumming. Students in the Drum Corps attend weekly rehearsals, in preparation for performances at a number of events, including the ANZAC Day March, Twilight Concerts and the Mackay Eisteddfod.

Cultural Events

Production

Every two years, Holy Spirit College provides an opportunity for further development through producing a musical, theatre restaurant, variety concert, cultural tour or another cultural event. This is an opportunity for students to further their skills in a range of different areas. Keep an eye on the College newsletters for the cultural production each year.

VariARTy Exhibition

Holy Spirit College presents the VariARTy Arts Exhibition each year. This provides students with an opportunity to showcase their works for the wider community. Many different mediums are used to allow the public to immerse themselves in the artistic talents of Holy Spirit College students.

Other

F1 in Schools

Our F1 teams are groups of students who follow the pathway of engineering and manufacturing to design, test, make and race miniature Formula 1 cars. They are provided with access to real-world technology such as 3D CAD/CAM/CAE engineering design software and soon become proficient in Coding and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Teams have the opportunity to compete in school, regional, state, national and world finals.

Learning Investigators

The Learning Investigators program is intended for Year 7 and 8 students who can demonstrate and are committed to demonstrating the capacity, motivation, drive and positive attitudes necessary to consistently strive for the highest standards in their Learning. Just as particular Students harbour the motivation and commitment to strive for excellence in various Cultural, Service, and Sporting Activities, there are students who are especially committed to realising Academic Excellence.

Robotics Club

The Robotics Club is a group of students from Year 7 to Year 12 who build and use code to program Lego NXT and EV3 robots to play soccer. They meet one lunch time a week and have competed against other schools locally in Mackay, Rockhampton and Brisbane.
